What people use it for

  • Backups

Server and database backups from restic, rclone or any tool that writes to S3.

  • Media and uploads

Images, video and files your app stores, kept private and read with its own keys.

  • Logs and exports

Log archives, database dumps and reports that pile up and rarely change.

  • Datasets and builds

Training data, build artifacts and release files for your pipelines.

Use the Tools You Already Have

Create buckets and keys in the console, through the REST API, with the rarecloud CLI or Terraform, or ask your AI agent. Then move your files with any S3 tool that takes a custom endpoint: the settings below are the ones the console gives you.

  1. Create a bucket

Pick a name and a region. With your first bucket you also choose your namespace.

  2. Create an access key

For every bucket or only some, read-only or read and write. The secret is shown once.

  3. Copy a snippet

Each bucket page has ready-made settings for the AWS CLI, rclone, s3cmd, Python and Node.js.

Every account gets the same features. The price only changes with what you store and download.

Up to 100 Buckets
Create up to 100 buckets per account, each in the region you pick when you create it.
Your Own Namespace
Every bucket name starts with a namespace you choose once, so the names you want are never taken by another customer.
Keys You Scope
Give each app its own key, for every bucket or only some, read-only or read and write. Revoke a key and it stops working.
Versioning
Turn versioning on for a bucket to keep earlier versions of the files you overwrite or delete. Old versions count as stored data.
Private by Default
Buckets are private. Every request is signed with one of your access keys.
Usage in the Console
See stored data and object counts for each bucket, plus the account's downloads and what the month has cost so far.
5 TB to Start
Each account can store up to 5 TB. Need more? Request a higher limit from Cloud, then Limits, in the console.
No Bucket, No Fee
Delete your last bucket and the €10 stops. Your keys pause too, and work again with your next bucket.

Questions Before You Store

What does object storage cost?
€10 a month per account, which includes 1 TB of storage. Above 1 TB, storage costs €0.01 per GB a month. Downloads are free up to the amount you store, and above that they cost €0.01 per GB. Requests have no fee. Prices exclude VAT.
How are free downloads counted?
Each month, downloads up to your average stored volume for that month are free. Store 200 GB and you can download 200 GB at no charge. Store 500 GB and download 800 GB, and you pay for 300 GB: €3, so €13 for the month.
Do deleted files still count?
They can, for up to 90 days. A file you delete can keep counting towards your stored data for up to 90 days. Inside the 1 TB included in the €10, that costs nothing extra.
How do bucket names work?
When you create your first bucket you also choose a namespace: 3 to 16 lowercase letters and digits, starting with a letter. It can never be changed, and some names are reserved. Every bucket is then named namespace-name, for example acme-media, and that full name is what your S3 tools use.
Which tools work with it?
Tools that speak the S3 API and let you set a custom endpoint, such as the AWS CLI, rclone, s3cmd, Cyberduck and the AWS SDKs for Python, JavaScript and other languages. The endpoint is https://s3.<region>.rarestack.net, for example https://s3.eu-central-1.rarestack.net for Amsterdam. Each bucket page in the console shows ready-made settings for the AWS CLI, rclone, s3cmd, Python and Node.js.
How do access keys work?
Each key covers every bucket or a list of them, with read-only or read and write access. An account can have up to 20 keys. The secret is shown once, when you create the key. To change what a key can do, create a new one and revoke the old one.
Where can my buckets live?
You pick a region for each bucket. Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Milan are in the EU. Two more European regions are in the United Kingdom, outside the EU, and ten are in North America and Asia-Pacific. A bucket stays in the region you created it in.
Can I make a bucket public?
Not today. Buckets are private, and every request is signed with one of your access keys.
How is it billed?
The €10, storage above 1 TB and downloads above what you store go on your monthly cloud invoice, next to your servers, and are paid from your account credit. Top up by card, PayPal, Alipay, crypto or bank transfer, in EUR or USD. Delete your last bucket and the €10 stops until you create another.
Can I move my data from another provider?
Yes, with rclone. Add your old provider and RareCloud as two remotes in rclone.conf, then copy bucket to bucket in one command: rclone sync oldprovider:my-bucket rarecloud:acme-media --progress. The data streams through the machine that runs rclone, so a server close to both ends is fastest. With the AWS CLI, sync to a local folder first (aws s3 sync s3://my-bucket ./my-bucket), then upload it: aws s3 sync ./my-bucket s3://acme-media --endpoint-url https://s3.eu-central-1.rarestack.net. Uploads have no transfer fee, and requests have no fee.
Object storage or block storage?
Object storage keeps files in buckets that your apps and tools reach over HTTPS from anywhere, which suits backups, media, logs and exports. Block Storage is a disk you attach to one Cloud VM and format with a filesystem, which suits databases and apps that expect a local disk. Many setups use both: the database on a volume, its backups in a bucket.
Can I manage it from the CLI, Terraform or an AI agent?
Yes. The rarecloud CLI has bucket and object-storage commands, the Terraform provider has rarecloud_object_storage_bucket and rarecloud_object_storage_key, and the MCP server lets Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients create buckets and keys, asking for your confirmation first. All of them use the same REST API as the console, with API tokens you can scope and set to expire. To move the files themselves, use any S3 tool.
Do you issue VAT invoices for businesses?
Yes. Invoices come from Rare Mood Agency SRL (RareCloud), registered in Romania, with EU VAT, in EUR or USD. Businesses in another EU country with a valid VAT ID are invoiced without VAT, under the reverse charge.
