OpenClaw can act on your behalf, so an open install is a real risk. Security researchers have found thousands of exposed instances in the wild running without authentication. We created this hardened setup to fix that.

Our setup script implements 8 layers of security: nftables firewall, fail2ban, SSH hardening, gateway authentication, AppArmor profiles, Docker sandboxing, systemd isolation, and screen lock for desktop mode. You do not have to take our word for it: read the code yourself.

Security researchers and developers are welcome to review the script, report vulnerabilities and send improvements.

What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is a free, open-source personal AI assistant that runs on your own infrastructure. It lets you interact with AI models (Claude, GPT) through messaging apps like Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, and Slack, while your history and settings stay on your own server. It can browse the web, run code, and automate tasks.
What security measures are included?
We pre-configure several security layers: nftables firewall with minimal open ports, fail2ban for brute-force protection, AppArmor profiles, automatic security updates, and the OpenClaw dashboard bound to localhost only. This gives you a hardened starting point, though as with any software, security also depends on how you use and configure it.
What's the difference between Server and Desktop mode?
Server mode runs headless with minimal resources (4GB RAM): great for production use where you access AI through messaging apps. Desktop mode includes a full XFCE desktop with real browsers (8GB RAM) where the AI works like a person: browsing sites, filling forms, clicking buttons. You can watch everything via VNC and some websites that block headless browsers work perfectly in Desktop mode.
Do I need technical knowledge?
Minimal. You'll receive connection details via email. SSH to your server, and follow the simple guide shown on login: add your API key, restart the gateway, connect your messaging channel. That's it. Everything else is pre-configured.
How do I connect my AI model?
You have two options: use an API key from Anthropic or OpenAI, or login directly with your existing Claude/ChatGPT account token. Either way, your credentials stay on your server; we never see them.
How do I access my AI after setup?
Mostly through messaging apps. SSH into your server, run a few commands to connect Telegram/WhatsApp/Discord, and then just message your bot like any contact. You can also access the web dashboard via SSH tunnel for advanced configuration.
Can the AI browse websites and run code?
Yes. OpenClaw includes browser control for web interactions: searching, reading pages, filling forms, taking screenshots. It can also execute code in sandboxed environments. These are core features of OpenClaw that make it more than just a chat interface.
How is this different from using ChatGPT or Claude directly?
Three main differences: (1) History: your conversations are stored on your server, and the model provider only sees the prompts you send; (2) Integration: access AI through any messaging app, not just a web browser; (3) Automation: OpenClaw can browse the web, run code, and execute tasks autonomously. It's an AI agent, not just a chatbot.
Why host OpenClaw on a VPS instead of my local machine?
A VPS provides 24/7 availability: your AI assistant is always online, even when your computer is off. It also offers better connectivity for messaging integrations, dedicated resources, and a stable IP address. Plus, you don't need to worry about port forwarding or dynamic DNS.

What messaging platforms does OpenClaw support?
OpenClaw supports WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Signal, iMessage, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Matrix, and more. You can connect multiple platforms simultaneously and manage them all from one AI assistant. iMessage needs a Mac running a relay.
